Elder Daniel Young and Elder Barton
P-day in Paranoa-on the way to the waterfalls
Cristiano and Leyla's Family
Dear Family and Friends,
This week was another whirlwind, with running after investigators, introduce ourselves and try to convince them we can be the same as the other Elders, meeting members/less active members and trying to meet everyone. So we're a little tired today but it is all good. The ward here is smaller, like Sobradinho I, but the members here are amazing, and we have already received many references of their friends and family to visit. It should be a really good transfer.
Elder Fillmore just got back from Tocantins, so it's a little cold here for him. He works really hard. He loves talking to everyone, so we are meeting a lot more people.
This area has a lot of people that are really serious about church so we have already gotten into my 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bible bash, which means we throw a good scripture at them and run, because we don't have time to debate whether we only take the sacrament on Easter or if Moses saw God face to face. You can usually tell when a person really wants to know the truth or just fight with you.
The Elders before us baptized a really amazing man-Ivanildo. He is 42 and worked in a law office until health problems forced him to retire. He was called to be the ward mission leader assistant so he and the LMA (how you shorten and abbreviate ward mission leader in Portuguese-lider da obra missionaria) are getting a bunch of plans to help us reactivate the less actives, because our ward has a lot. The LMA is only 19 years old, but because he has serious health problems-he explained it and it sounds like sickle cell disease, where the blood cells are deformed-he can't serve a mission. He was in the hospital when we arrived, getting his weekly blood transfusion. He and his family were sealed about a year ago, so they are all very amazing people. Ivanildo-the recent convert, is really dedicated and really trying to learn all he can about the gospel. He is really intelligent also, and he is already wanting to get his blessing Patriarchal. He has an old beat-up triple combination that someone gave him and he really enjoys studying the Doctrine and Covenants.
That's really exciting about the Sanchez's coming home, I was thinking about them the other day. They are really amazing people. Yes, I will be half a sister tomorrow (meaning he's been out 9 months-half of a sister mission), that is kinda weird. I still feel really young on the mission, but there is an Elder in our district that just arrived, and so it was like watching myself almost 7 months ago when I arrived. It is interesting how time feels like it is crawling, but then you have another transfer or Sunday and realize that it is flying by. It's hard to realize next month I will be 20. Crazy.
Today I bought new pants! Yeah! It came out to around $59 reais, and I also withdrew $20 reais. Thank you very much for helping not lose my giant monster pants in the street...okay not that bad, but they were huge! I'll take a Subway photo for you guys.
Here are the photos-one of Elder Young and I, one of me on the way to the waterfalls, and one of Cristiano and Leyla's family.
Fano is looking very pretty in his senior photos, that is pretty crazy he is graduating this next year. Good luck with football Fano and Caleb-and Timo if he is playing later this year.
Love you all,
Elder Barton
P.S. I guess Gama is more like central Utah than southern, but it does have that red soil that Utah and Brasilia have.
