Hello from Toasty Tocantins, where 35-40 degrees Celsius is a nice day! But along with the heat our attitude is also hot, so that means baptisms for the zone this week. Our zone baptized 6, so we were happy with some much more elevated results than we have had the past few weeks. President leaves the mission tomorrow, so I don't have much news about that yet.
The branch here has a lot of return missionaries and young single adults that want to help us, but unfortunately we also have a lot of older members that aren't so keen on helping the missionaries, which is sad. Whenever members aren't so gung ho to help, I always think "I can baptize with or without you, but I can't make the branch/ward grow unless you want it". That is my attitude: I will have success, regardless of obstacles, but the ward/branch that doesn't help the missionaries won't grow for a long time. Being zone leader is a little smoother now. President Pizzirani's advice helped a lot and now we feel that our plans are a lot more inspired. This week I'll go out to one of the branches of the mission in Gurupi. It is about 4 hours by bus. My zone if roughly the size of Provo to St. George. In google maps put in the names of these cities to see where I am-Palmas, TO; Paraiso, TO; Miracema, TO; Porto Nacional, TO; and Gurupi, TO.
I have some pictures, 2 of the new face of the new 50 reais. They are starting to switch the money, starting this year with the 50 bill. I think it is really, really cool.
The other is of caju, a really tasty tropical fruit. It's actually really sour, but eating it with sugar or making the juice is so good. The interesting little curved thing on top is very interesting. You dry it out in the sun for a few days and then put it in fire. It then opens up and out pops-cashew. I did it myself, it is really cool. It also made me think how interesting it is how it waits to be burned before opening up. So you will only plant the seed in perfect conditions-little fighting for resources because the fire wiped out other plants, fertilizer from the ashes. Really, really cool.
Who went to Cancun with you guys?
With love,
Elder Barton
