October 25, 2010-Elder Bednar Week

Dear Family and Friends,
Happy Birthday Mom! Feliz aniversario Mamae!
Tomorrow Elder Bednar will be with us, so Preparation Day is a day early. I was really excited to see your emails, thanks for writing early! Sorry to hear about the football downs, but I'm glad everyone played well and are safe and sound.
Sorry, I didn't do anything fun for the 1 year mark. I bought an ice cream cone...which was very tasty, but that was it. I probably should have taken a picture. I kept thinking a combination of-"This has gone by so fast, where did the time go?" and "I'll be home this time next year." Very strange.
Some new missionaries got here from the Provo MTC and so Elder Fuller and Holden from my group are training, very cool. It's weird to think that one year ago I was in the MTC. Time is passing quickly.
The rainy season has really hit us. My umbrella is breaking, so it will be hard to see him go, he's been a good friend and kept me dry from January-April. Let's hope he has a little bit left. The streets are almost constantly flooded. If you haven't sent the package yet, could you add the other Hush Puppies?
This week we really taught a lot more lessons and found some new people to teach, so this week should be really good. We have found several faithfuls of other churches, so we should have some good lessons/discussions. The first lesson always goes well, until we get to the Book of Mormon and then come out the doubts and all the things they heard about us. Here are some of the most common:
-we worship Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon is much more important than the Bible
-we baptize dead people
-we are racists
-we have multiple wives
Here are some of my favorite funny ones:
-we baptize in bikinis
-the president of the church is the president of the USA
-people have to speak English to be baptized

Best things you can do to prepare for a mission: (Dave asked him this in his letter)
-do your small callings-home teaching, prepare lessons, do quorum responsibilities-it's amazing how doing your duty for the small things could make you an amazing missionary-and read the Book of Mormon 20 minutes a day
-Learn to take responsibility for your work and actions-good and bad. "The buck stops here".

Life here is good. The hours moved here, so we're waking up in the dark. And with cloudy days it's even darker. Not my favorite, but part of life.
That's about it that is new. Thank goodness for waterproof shoes. Without them, life would be very miserable (and possibly with foot fungus).
Love,
Elder Barton
