October 12, 2010-Sweaty in Sul, Gama

Dear Family and Friends,
This week has been the hottest week of my life. We are over a month due for the rainy season to begin. We've had two small showers, but they just made it really humid. I don't really miss the rainy season, because walking around soaked all day isn't the funnest, but soaking through your shirts with sweat isn't much better (I think it might be worse). But we're drinking a lot of water and applying lots of sunscreen, so we're okay.
Last week I saw Sister Ortolano (from our ward) and Elder Barry (from our stake), which was very, very fun. They both looked a little nervous, but they'll do great. They both have amazing, amazing trainers. Elder Kirkham is hilarious-he is from Elder Christensen's and Elder Hamilton's group. And Sister Adams is great, she was in Ceilandia when I arrived. The world really is so small, who would have thought I would be in a mission with one of my best friends, one of the Wardies (another best friend) and Elder Barry? Crazy stuff. It also made me feel really old. I remember when I got here like it was yesterday....
Katie and Skyler are getting married!!!!! I've been waiting several months for this announcement. Okay, first things first. I need you to use my money and buy Quelf (can't give it away, I want to see Dad ride an ostrich around a beached whale when I get back)-see Amazon if Patriot Games doesn't have it-Patriot Games is next to Chuck Wagon/Wendy's in Orem. And then buy a box of popcorn. Put the two together and write, From Elder Barton. That would be great, and I want to see pictures. Tell them congrats.
I'll look at shirts and get back to you about that. But I think 17 1/2 would be great. As for package stuff......razors? I don't know, remind me next week. Tijuana got a temple? That's cool, kinda nuts.
I got a package from Breanna. It was full of pictures, and blog posts, so that will be fun to look through those today. She also sent some amazing tasting German gummies. Some of the pictures blew my mind away. Europe looks so amazing. And old! Brasilia is only 50 years old, so everything here is really new. But it looks like it was an amazing trip. I would love to go visit Europe now. It was funny looking at the German writing, because whenever I think of a foreign language, I just think of Portuguese. It's so amazing how big and complex our world is. I might want to study another language when I get back, but we'll have to see how it goes to learn without the Gift of Tongues.
Sorry about the Eagle stuff, that stinks. But it's worth it (the paperwork for it is making us crazy!). I'm glad you guys volunteered for the Nauvoo Pageant-especially because I won't be there, phew. Hahaha, just kidding. That should be interesting. Good luck with that (we applied to be in the Nauvoo Pageant next summer).
We're still plugging along. No big developments, just working and trying to find new people. We have a lot of Bible bashers here, and I'm getting sick of getting stuck in discussions where they just sit there and throw random scriptures at us. It's really getting down to finding people that will READ the Book of Mormon and PRAY and ask about it. We can battle it all day, use scripture after scripture, but even if I win, and they don't pray and receive a testimony, it was wasted time. But we'll do our part and the Lord will do His. The ward here is starting to get more involved with the work, so I know we'll see results this transfer.
Love,
Elder Barton
p.s. For the Christmas package-any new MOTAB cds, for example, the Christmas one of last year. Please do not include a Christmas tree-all apartments have 3-4 because no one keeps them, they just throw them in the corner.
I'm good for almost everything-deodorant, garments, socks, etc. I'll try to think of things.
